The Thornburns
After returning home to Coldwater at the End of WW2, Dr. Nicolas Thornburn (“Doctor Nic”) and his wife Selma set up a rehabilitation center on the vacant second floor of The Mill. The purpose of the center was to help soldiers re-adapt to “normal” Life. As time went by soldiers would enter the Mill but would not return home. When families inquired about their loved ones, they would be told by Dr. Nic that more time was needed and that he was working on something that would “help” the soldiers. Eventually some of the soldiers would return home in a “zombie” like state, unable to speak and with slowed motor skills. Soon, whispers spread around town of The Thornburn’s “experiments” and rumors of the Doctor having gone mad.
Eventually the center was raided by local authorities and what was found inside could not be comprehended. Machines that looked like they had come from the future and horrific experiments that traumatized those that looked upon them! No one knows exactly what drove the Thornburns to do what they did but a number of reasons were speculated, from experiments gone horribly wrong to the spirits of the former residents of the second floor (the Dravens) possessing him and his wife. Unfortunately, the Thornburns disappeared and with them the answers the town was seeking.

From a young boy, Nicolas Thornburn was fascinated with science. Later as a young Man, he would become a doctor and serve his country in the 2nd World War. It was there that he started experimenting with soldiers to find ways of speeding up recovery times, getting them back to the front lines sooner. While the Senior Officers saw value in what the doctor was doing, the experiments were said to be unorthodox and eventually Nicolas was given an Honorable Discharge as most soldiers wanted nothing to do with Thornburn’s operating table.

When Selma was a little girl, she would help her mother tend the many gardens they had. Selma’s Mother was always amazed at how her daughter could help gardens grow. Whether it was fruit, vegetables, plants or trees, they all seemed to thrive under Selma’s care.
Selma would marry Nicolas Thornburn shortly after the War and help her husband with his Rehabilitation Center as well as setting up a greenhouse inside the Mill.
